Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 340

January 30, 2023

Yesterday morning was quiet. Very strong attacks occurred in the city of Kherson and in Kherson region. Kharkiv was shelled with rockets during the night.

The Word… “And what else should I say?” “Be of good courage, trusting in the Lord.”

The consequence of trusting in God is courage… With the natural fears that are within us. Those who trust in the Lord can overcome this fear. Before the Word of Jesus, even whole legions of evil spirits sense power, fear, and are cast out by the Word, which has power. This is further proof that Jesus has conquered death.
God is love!

We live in a war, we do not live by war!

Vinnytsia:
Children together thank God and the good shepherd Br. Joseph, the pastor, for concluding the “carol season.” Sweet table. Let’s pray for our Benefactors and the parents of our children. (photo)
Last night our Capuchin church hosted the first organ music concert, “Evenings of spiritual music at the Capuchins’.” The organ was played by Mrs. Veronika Struk from Odessa. The music allowed the participants to relax, not to say it was therapeutic. The concert also had a charitable dimension. The proceeds will go to help ZSU (ЗСУ). (photo)

News from the brothers:

Vinnytsia (Bro. Igor Mularski):
Vinnytsia we too continue to carol and take part in Nativity performances with our children and wonderfully combine with a charity fair. We donate the proceeds to ZSU (ЗСУ). (photo)

Krasyliv (Bro. Maciej Styburski):
One can pray not only with words. (Praying with dance)
Today ended such a retreat.
God be thanked! (photo)

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 339

January 29, 2023

It’s been calm in our region. Alarms, rocket fire in the East and South of Ukraine. Sunday morning has been calm. We wait to see what the day will bring.

The Word… To hear God, one must have this attitude: “Seek the Lord, all humble of the earth…” Hearing the voice of God, you will have a heart full of peace, even in war.
“… There will be no one to frighten them.” “Blessed are…” “Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven.”
Heaven, the Kingdom of God, is already here and we are waiting for it!
God is love.

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Zaporizhzhya:
On this day in 2017 Bishop Stanislaw Padewski, Capuchin bishop, died in the Capuchin monastery in Sędziszów Małopolski, Poland. He was auxiliary bishop of Kam’yanets’-Podil’s’kyi 1995-98, auxiliary bishop of Lviv 1998-2002, diocesan bishop of Kharkiv-Zaporizhzhya 2002-09, senior bishop of Kharkiv-Zaporizhzha diocese since 2009. Vinnytsia:
A small, big miracle. At one caroling event together, little Rostik, made gestures with his hands, imitating a guitarist. I noticed the boy and said to the gathered people that someone should buy the boy a guitar—the boy lives with his grandmother, and it will be difficult to buy a guitar from her pension. The following Sunday, the benefactor brought and handed the guitar to Rostik. The presentation of the guitar. (photo) Let us pray for Rostik and for our Benefactors.

Kharkiv:
Military chaplaincy and more. I received this material from a friend in Kharkiv. I invite you to listen, especially to our chaplain brothers.

War and its face:

In Russia, if a soldier’s body is not returned from the war, the family receives no compensation or other form of support.

News from the brothers:

Dnipro (Br. Jerzy Zielinski):
The site after the explosion of this rocket in Dnipro 2 weeks ago. Today I was very close to the site at our parishioners. The horrifying sight was on the day of the explosion. Fire, smoke, stench, collapses, under which there were dead bodies and people still alive. A missile did not hit the thermal power plant 3km from this place.
A lot of cars stop at this place at the bus stop, which has become a sort of symbolic grave of those who unexpectedly lost their lives. People comment and some pray. The wounds inflicted by the ongoing war will take a long time to heal. Kyrie eleison. (photo)

Krasyliv (Br. Maciej Styburski):

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 338

January 28, 2023

Yesterday morning calm. Night quiet. Morning, with us so far calm. In Dnipro there are alarms. God, give us peace!

The Word… Listening to the word: “We praise the Lord, for he has visited his people.”
“… He will deliver us from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.”
“He will give us that from the power of our enemies we shall be snatched, we shall serve Him without fear.”

“God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son; everyone who believes in Him has eternal life.”

“Teacher, do you care nothing that we perish?”

“Why are you so fearful? How lacking in faith you are! They became very fearful and spoke among themselves: Who is He actually, that even the whirlwind and the lake obey Him?”

And so God leads us through the days of war.
God is love.

We live in a war, we do not live by war.

South Sudan, Africa:

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 337

January 27, 2023

More than 30 rockets were fired at Ukraine yesterday. Fire protection systems are working. Explosions are heard over Vinnytsia. City transit is not working.
Alarms all over Ukraine. A second wave of rocket raids has already been announced. Russian terrorism does not stop.
God, grant us peace.

A total of 55 rockets were fired at Ukraine, 47 rockets were destroyed, 8 rockets hit their targets. Only or as many as… eight.
In all regions of Ukraine 11 people were killed, not military, innocent people.
Electricity is being turned off all over Ukraine. The worst situation with electricity is in Kyiv, Vinnytsia and Odessa regions. It’s dark, it’s cold, it’s hard to live, it’s hard for people to get home.
God, grant us peace.

This morning in our region calm. In Dnipro, in Kharkiv alarms.
God, give us peace!

The Word… Salvation comes from God !
“Have confidence in the Lord and do what is good, and you will dwell on earth and live securely. Rejoice in the Lord, and He will fulfill the desires of your heart. Entrust your way to the Lord, trust Him, and He Himself will act.  He will make your righteousness shine like the light, and your righteousness like the splendor of noon. The Lord strengthens a man’s steps on the path that is pleasing to him. And though he fall, he shall not lie down, for his hand the Lord will uphold. The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord, He their refuge in time of affliction. The Lord assists and delivers them, He delivers from the wicked and preserves them, for He is their refuge.”

Yes, yes… “The salvation of the righteous comes from God.”

We live in a war, we do not live by war.

We are with you in this difficult moment and hope to host you soon in the land of St. Francis.
Sincerely, Paolo. (photo)

South Sudan, Africa:
Br. Marek Miszczynski, our provincial, who is currently with the brothers in Sudan writes: “Good news! God be thanked for the benefactors! We are also praying for peace. Here in Africa people are also asking about the situation in Ukraine and praying. Greetings!”

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 336

January 26, 2023

Yesterday morning calm. As of 9:17 a.m., alerts throughout Ukraine.
In the afternoon, another alert across Ukraine. In the evening, powerful explosions in the Dnieper River. We are waiting for information. During the night and this morning alarms. Explosions can be heard. We hope it’s just anti-missile systems.

Very sad news has reached us. Near Bahmut a ZSU soldier, Vilatiy Gedzun died—a 31 years old, husband, father. A native of Khmelnytskyi. In his student days he lived at our monastery in Kyiv, helping us. Brother, rest in eternal peace! (photo)

The Word… The author of the Letter to the Hebrews asks, “Let us not forsake our common gatherings, as has become the custom of some, but let us encourage one another, and this the more clearly you see the day approaching.”
The word is simple, there is no salvation outside the Church. Hence the encouragement.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet, Lord, and a light on my path.”
God is love!

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Lviv:
The brothers do not stop praying and once again invite us to a prayer vigil, night and day. (photo)

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 335

January 25, 2022

Yesterday morning was calm. After lunch alarms throughout Ukraine. In the evening alarms in the Dnipro. Shots at border towns in the Sumy region. There are casualties among civilian victims. In the morning, more alarms across Ukraine.

Today is the Birthday of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Let us pray for the President, and for Ukraine.

The Word… The whole life, the history of St. Paul is one great Word of God.
“You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, that you should go and bear fruit.”
It is true that, like Paul, each of us is God’s chosen one, so that by our conversion we speak one thing, that God is love.
I have written before that the word of St. Paul, “power is made perfect in weakness” and “I can do all things in him who strengthens me” is a Word close to my heart.
Thank God for everything!

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 334

January 24, 2023

In our region last morning and day were calm. Kharkiv and other regions have been shelled by missiles. There are casualties. Alarms in the Dnipro. In Dnipro, trolley and trolleybuses traffic is suspended due to shortages of electric power.

The Word… “You did not want a blood sacrifice or the fetuses of the earth, but you opened my ears.”
What’s the use of a word when a person can’t hear, has a closed ear. Hence the gift of an open ear that hears the Word… I love you… You are a child of God, God loves you. Through this listening you enter into a close relationship with God and others who love you.
“For whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me,” says Jesus in today’s Word.

We live in war, we don’t live by war.

Also to Sister Olga from Krasyliv, who came with the young people and served us with her testimony and presence! (photo)
This time the retreat was held at the Pilgrim House in Briukhovychi near Lviv. We thank the Benefactors, thanks to whom we were able to have the retreat in such a comfortable city at an affordable price for the youth.
Responsible for leading the retreat from the Franciscan Friars OFMConv and the Capuchin Friars OFMCap were the national spiritual assistants—Br. Pavel Odoy and Br. Sergiy Voroniuk.

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 333

January 23, 2023

A quiet day and morning yesterday.
Yesterday alarms and rocket raids plagued eastern and southern areas of Ukraine. People are killed, civilians. Unfortunately, the wartime norm.
At our place today similar to yesterday—a quiet morning. We will see what the day will bring.
God, grant us peace.

Yesterday we celebrated the “Day of Unity of Ukraine” (День соборності України).

I ask you to pray for Ukraine. (photo)

The Word… “If a kingdom is internally divided, such a kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is internally divided, such a house cannot stand.”
Among other things, yesterday we celebrated the Unity of Ukraine. Let us pray for unity in our religious communities, unity in our families, and above all for unity in our hearts and heads…
God, give us peace!!!

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 332

January 22, 2023

Yesterday was a quiet day in our area. Eastern and southern Ukraine at war. Sunday morning in our area calm! What will the day bring?
God, give us peace!

The Word… “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.”
I am convinced that this nation that has seen the light is Ukraine: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?”
There will be light, there will be no trepidation, when I follow Jesus, not before him, but after Jesus.

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 331

January 21, 2023

War night and morning calm. Around lunchtime all Ukraine “red.” Alarm! People fill our basement (shelter). Russian (Iranian) drones were downed over Kyiv. The Zaporizhzhya region suffered most during the night.
The morning at our place is calm and warm. We are waiting what the day will bring.
God, grant us peace!

The Word… Personally for me, the Word of God is the story of the life and vocation of Br. Adam Trochimowicz, who yesterday defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Krakow, Poland. With other brothers, I witnessed how God led and continues to lead Adam. May God be glorified in this story. Deo gratias!
“Open, Lord, our hearts, that we may listen attentively to the words of your Son.”

We live in a war, we do not live by war.

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 330

January 20, 2023

Yesterday morning was quiet. As our angels, Marcin and his team were leaving, alarms started all over Ukraine! Thank God, they were only alarms… Peaceful night…
This morning was calm!

Brother Adam Trochimowicz from Uzhgorod, despite the war and physical affliction, defends his doctoral dissertation in Krakow.

The Word… One word touches me, “he himself wanted.”
“Jesus went up on a mountain and called to Himself those whom He Himself willed, and they came to Him. And He appointed the Twelve to accompany Him, that He might send them out to preach, and that they might have authority to cast out evil spirits.”
The fact that I am a Capuchin, a priest, is because Jesus Himself wanted it.
I’m a husband, a wife, it’s because Jesus wanted it that way.
Together we look to Jesus and from him we learn love. (photo)
Jesus is the Lord of our life and death.
God is love!
God loves you!

We live in a war, we do not live by war!

January 19, 2023

Yesterday at 8:00 a.m., as a result of a helicopter crash in Brovary, Kyiv region, 14 people including one child were killed. 25 people were injured, including 11 children. The cause of the plane crash is being determined. (photo)

A calm, warm morning. Alarms in some areas. We are waiting… what the next day will bring. 10:30 am—first alarms all over Ukraine. Where and what will arrive… God, give us peace!!!

The Word… God, through the Church gives us in the liturgy Psalm 40: “You did not want a blood sacrifice, nor of the fetuses of the earth, but you opened my ears”.
How important to keep our ears and eyes open. To hear the voice (Word) of God, to see God in your story is the way of happiness, for you and for me.
“It is a joy for me to do Your will, my God, and Your Law dwells in my heart.”
The joy of doing God’s will.  To live in God’s will is a cause for joy.
Holy Spirit, give us to hear these Words and be happy.
God is love.

We live in a war, we do not live by war.

Vinnytsia:
Our angels, Marcin, Artur, Krzysztof arrived in Vinnytsia. (photo)

Yesterday at 4:47 p.m. it was reported that a Russian rocket killed 45 people, including 6 children in Dnipro. (photo) A breach in an apartment building and in hearts remain. (photo)

The Word… Jesus cured various diseases and maladies, but the biggest problem was the hardness of heart and the unreformable mentality of man. “… Having looked around at them with anger, grieved because of the hardness of their hearts…” Lord, convert us and we will repent to you.
God is love!

We live in war, we do not live by war.

This time they brought blankets, pants, clothes and a lot of food from a temporary storeroom at my brother-in-law’s house and from my parents’ house (their house in the background). There are things for civilians and the army. (photo)

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 327

January 17, 2023

As of 2 pm yesterday, 40 bodies had already been recovered from under the rubble of a house in Dnipro, collapsed by a Russian rocket. The night was unexpectedly calm, as was this morning. In Dnipro, Zaporizhzhya, Kharkiv morning alarms. We are alive.
God, grant us peace!
Today our brother Anton from Starokostiantyniv celebrates his name day. Brother, may God bless you and keep you safe. Best wishes.

The Word… “It was the Sabbath that was established for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath as well.”
A Christian is a free man. In this freedom to which God has called us, a child of God, the Christian fulfills the law knowing that it is not on the fulfillment of the law, of works, that his salvation depends. God is love! God loves you!

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Letters from Br. Błażej: Night 326

January 16, 2023

A quiet day and night yesterday. In the region of the East and South of Ukraine alarms, air raids, hostilities, people are killed.
Already 35 casualties in Dnipro.
It takes 40 hours to recover from the rocket attack.

The Word… The word? A word that is old, familiar, often repeated, but at the same time… “Alive is the word of God and effective, capable of judging the desires and thoughts of the heart.” Where is the secret of the “old” but still “living” Word? The Holy Spirit is the one who makes everything new.
Holy Spirit, come…
God is love!

We live in war, we do not live by war.

Kharkiv:
Tetyana, our acquaintance writes:

I look that all the time there are explosions in Kharkov, I am no longer surprised by anything. They don’t mention us anymore. Recently there were explosions both in the morning and evening. And before yesterday after the explosions the whole Kharkiv region sat without light, in some places until now without light. We are praying for the people of Dnipro. It is a great suffering.
